A Leather Helmet...Goggles...and a White Silk Aviator Scarf (Cashmere Scarf)

Cashmere Scarf

The year is 1918. You're in your World War I biwing fighter plane and about to dogfight 3 German fighter planes over the battlefields of France. You have your leather helmet and googles on and of course...your white silk aviator scarf. The white scarf is blowing the wind...trailing behind. As you turn towards the Germans....

Ok, that senario might not mean much to you what with fighting and war and all that stuff. But, you have to admit there's one item in the above picture you might be interested in...the white aviator scarf. Yes, its true, any white scarf about 6 feet long and 14" wide could be considered a "white silk aviator scarf".

But, just think what a wonderful gift one of those "white" scarves would make for a man for almost any occasion... birthday's, Father's Day, Christmas or any time at all.

Have you ever watched a church choir sing? Notice the color of scarves they use? Yes, you guessed it...the long white (aviator?) scarf.

Of course, I've been mainly talking about the white scarf but you can choose a man's scarf from a wide variety of available choices. They come in a hue of colors, prints, designs, and fabric quality. Each of them is unique and represents the history, culture, and artistry of the region it came from.

A silk scarf is normally in pleasant colors with many innovative motifs and designs like geometric, floral, animal, or abstract paintings. Additionally, beaded or hand-stitched edges add to the look and elegance of the scarf.

Mens scarfs can be made of silk, Cashmere or almost any material. It can be hand painted or beaded, embroidered or made from a simple pattern out of cotton. Cashmere men's scarves have an international flair to them with their exquisite designs and qualities. Cashmere is very warm, heavy, and luxurious. The fiber used in cashmere is from the Himalayan goat. The best and highest quality cashmere scarves are hand woven as the fragile wool cannot bear the spinning by machine.

One excellent country to find skilled scarf and shawl artisans are in India. Here they display their artistic fervor with each men's scarf they make. Often times, they will use paintings to depict their folklore and show off their articulate brushwork.

Sequin men's scarves come in varied designs...examples are Jamawar sequin scarves, Floral sequin scarves, Jaquard sequin scarves, or braided scarves also. If you don't know what a sequin is, its a small star-like addition to the design on the scarf. Sequin men's scarves are very popular with young boys as it gels well with all types of their "in" garments.

Similarly, some men like beaded scarves as they add to the style and elegance of most any outfit. Different colored beads in various shapes and sizes are sometimes used.

Caring for your cashmere(Cashmere Scarf)

Cashmere Scarf

When cared for correctly, the luxurious feel of cashmere improves with time and high quality cashmere should last for years and years. Hand washing is usually the best way to care for your cashmere and dry cleaning is only recommended for 'airy' garments such as cardigans and camisoles, or woven products like Pashminas. Always check the label on the garment and, if it's dry clean only, ensure that the dry cleaner has experience with cashmere.

When hand-washing your cashmere it's best to use cool to lukewarm water and a mild detergent suitable for delicates (or preferably one suitable specifically for cashmere). Fabric softeners should be avoided with cashmere because over time they cause the fibres to stiffen.

Once washed and rinsed remove the garment from the water and squeeze very gently. Do not rub or twist. Give the garment a short spin in the washing machine or roll it up in a towel to absorb excess water. Make sure you re-shape the garment whilst it's damp and dry it flat, away from heat and sunlight. Never put cashmere in the tumble dryer.

Pilling (tiny balls of fibre) is natural in new cashmere but after a few washes these should stop forming. The best way to remove pills is to use a de-fuzz comb - if you pop the garment in the freezer before pilling you'll find pills easier to remove. It's usually best to de-pill your garment before washing it.

Never hang your cashmere on a hanger, as it will cause it to loose its shape. It's usually best to fold the garment and store it in a drawer or, better still, in a cashmere sweater bag which will keep it protected and away from moths.

What is cashmere?(Cashmere scarf)

Cashmere Scarf

Most of us love to wear cashmere products, but hardly few of us know: What is Cashmere?

It is a wool fabric which is used to prepare various woolen clothing items like scarves, sweaters, hats, socks etc. It has got it's name from a state in North of India called "Kashmir". Kashmir was the first source from where it was exported to various parts of world. Slowly it got popular due to its softness, light weight and warm nature. Now it is produced in various parts of world.

Cashmere fabric is made from very fine undercoat of goat hairs. These goats are found in very high altitude areas where winter temperatures go well below freezing.

With its popularity, lot of products have come to market which are labeled as cashmere but they are not 100% pure and other types of wool is mixed to lower the cost. For an item to be labeled as 100% cashmere it should conform to U.S Wool Products labeling Act. This act in brief says that a product should be labeled as cashmere only if it contains:

  • undercoat fibers of cashmere goat
  • the average diameter of the fiber less than 19 micron
  • coefficient of variation should not be more than 24%
  • coarse hair content (hairs with diameter great than 30 micron) should not be more than 3% (by weight)

With lot of adulterated cashmere wool products in the market, it is sometimes hard to find which one is pure. If you are buying online, make sure the seller has a test certificate which shows clearly that it has been tested and has been found 100% pure.
